How to Skincare Routine

Skincare, Self-Kare, same thing!;)

I am just going to go over a basic and easy skincare routine.  I find that sticking to this routine will only create washing your face twice a day a habit just like brushing your teeth. I know I feel odd if I leave the house and haven’t brushed my teeth!

You really need 3 key components for your skin, anything aside from that is specific towards your needs, for example, if you include an eye cream or serum into your routine.

The first product is a cleanser, there are so many, my absolute favorites is the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, this can be picked up at any drugstore and is under $10

The Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser is dermatologist recommended and affordable, it might take longer to work than something slightly stronger, but it won’t irritate your skin and cause more problems. In addition, this cleanser is unscented and is great for all skin types!

And my go-to cleanser is the Clinique Liquid Facial Soap, this is a great starter cleanser and very mild on the skin, a big plus is that this product is unscented.

The  Clinique Mild Cleanser is my favorite cleanser, I have gone through a handful of bottles already since being introduced! It is mild so it doesn’t irritate skin, easy to lather it up on hands, washcloth or any device to wash your face. Clinique has different types of cleanser’s for more oily or dry skin, going to a Clinique pop-up or their website will help determine your type of skin and which cleanser would work best for you. Just an FYI, I have normal to combination skin so mild is perfect for my skin.

Next step is toner! This is an essential product it helps to remove excess oil and dirt that your cleanser might have failed to remove, it also helps tighten your pores.

My favorite drugstore toner is Thayer’s Witch Hazel, I specifically love this brand, but I have picked up natural witch hazel from a different brand’s and this product has won me over completely (it’s worth the hype!). This product comes unscented, in lavender, cucumber, or my favorite rose petal.

The last step is an extremely important part of your skincare routine it is a moisturizer, it helps maintain the elasticity and collagen in your face.

It is nice to have one with SPF for sunny days as well…

Some really great moisturizers are…

  • Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizer Lotion
  • Origins Ginzing Energy-Boosting Gel Moisturizer
  • Tatcha The Dewy Skin Cream

Keep in mind the ingredients in a moisturizer, you’ll want them to work for your type of skin.

Things to keep in mind when picking out a moisturizer…

Dry Skin:

Look for products with Dimethicone to keep skin hydrated.

Oily Skin:

Look for ingredients with hyaluronic acid, help to keep the skin hydrated without clogging pores. Gel moisturizers tend to have ingredients that absorb oil.

Sensitive Skin:

Anything fragrance-free, it is an unnatural ingredient and irritates the skin, try to stick with natural and few ingredients.

Aloe and white tea are soothing with sensitive skin.

Combination Skin:

Look for a lightweight, water-based moisturizer, to lock in moisture without clogging pores.

Doing these 3 easy steps, cleansing, toning and moisturizing can create a routine. It will be trial and error, knowing your skin type is the most important to help care for it.

After mastering this routine incorporating other products for your skin will become easy, whether it is switching to a new moisturizer or adding an eye cream.

What kind of skin do you have; oily, sensitive, dry, combination, dry to combination, oily to combination?
